About Us
In 1997, ACADEMY looked quite a bit different than it does today. We started out as four families meeting in the living room of co-op founder, Nancy Leth. Nancy taught those eight children German and music. As other families joined, some of the other moms began to share in the teaching. Two years later, Detroit First Church of the Nazarene allowed the co-op to become an official ministry of the church. This idea of sharing talents and strengths, plus the amazing advantage to having different ages together, caught the attention of other homeschooling families and the co-op grew exponentially.
Nancy aptly named this group DFC ACADEMY – Detroit First Church Actively Christian Academically Diversified Enrichment Molding Youth. The co-op offered mostly enrichment classes such as drama, art, music, German & physical education.
That traditional model of the co-op has stood the test of time. As it has grown, many other classes have been added including a large amount of core subjects along with the enrichment choices.
In December of 2011, the co-op incorporated, and the name was modified to Homeschool ACADEMY, Inc.
A little ACADEMY trivia: In 2001, we held a contest to name a mascot and choose school colors. The dragonfly won and our colors are blue and silver!
